One of the small annoyances with using a truck bed regularly is dealing with loose ratchet straps.
They get tangled, tossed into boxes, wrapped incorrectly, or buried somewhere when you actually need them.
That is why these RIDERPM Retractable Ratchet Straps caught my attention.
Instead of carrying separate straps around, these mount directly onto the factory bed rail system of compatible Toyota Tacomas and Tundras.
Once installed, they essentially become a permanent part of the truck.
Why I Wanted Them
I use the bed of my Tacoma regularly.
Whether I am carrying tools, boxes, camping equipment, or random gear, things have a tendency to slide around if they are not secured.
Traditional straps work, but I wanted something that would always be there and ready to use.
That is the biggest advantage of this system.
Installation Is Extremely Simple
If your Tacoma already has the factory bed rail system, installation is straightforward.
The mounting hardware slides into the existing rail, and the strap assembly threads onto it using the built-in knobs.
You do not need to drill anything or permanently modify the truck.
In a normal installation, you should not even need hand tools.
I did use tools because I had to temporarily work around the bracket for my camper shell.
Works With My Camper Shell
This was one of my biggest questions before installing them.
My Tacoma has a camper shell, so there is already hardware mounted along the bed rail.
Fortunately, the retractable strap assembly still fit underneath the camper shell hardware without interfering with it.
That was a big plus for me because I did not want to choose between the camper shell and the tie-down system.
Adjustable Along the Rail
Another advantage is that the strap assembly is not locked into one permanent location.
Because it mounts to the factory rail, you can slide and reposition it depending on what you are hauling.
That makes the system much more flexible than a fixed anchor point.
If you have:
- a cooler
- storage bins
- lumber
- camping equipment
- tools
- other loose cargo
you can position the tie-down closer to the load rather than trying to make one fixed location work for everything.
Self-Retracting Strap
This is probably my favorite feature.
When you are finished using the strap, it retracts back into the housing automatically.
No rolling up loose webbing.
No tangled straps.
No knot of ratchet straps sitting in the corner of the truck bed.
You simply release the mechanism and let the strap retract.
That is a major convenience if you use tie-downs regularly.
Ratcheting and Locking
The mechanism is also smooth.
You pull the strap out to the length you need, move the red lever into the locking position, and then use the ratcheting mechanism to add tension.
When you are finished, you release it and allow the strap to retract.
It feels much cleaner and faster than setting up a traditional loose ratchet strap every time.
Swivel Design
The mount can rotate, which gives you more flexibility when approaching cargo from different angles.
That is useful because loads in a truck bed are rarely perfectly square or centered.
Being able to change the strap angle makes it easier to secure different shapes and sizes.
Build Quality
The system feels substantial overall.
The mechanism operates smoothly, and the straps retract cleanly.
My one concern is the size and geometry of the mounting bracket.
The bracket is fairly large and positioned high on the bed rail, so the load from the strap does not always feel perfectly centered over the rail attachment point.
I have not had a problem with it, but it is something I noticed and something I will keep an eye on during heavier use.
What I Like
The biggest positives for me are:
- very easy installation
- no drilling
- mounts to the factory rail
- works with my camper shell
- self-retracting straps
- smooth ratcheting mechanism
- swiveling mount
- adjustable position along the rail
- eliminates loose strap storage
The biggest benefit is convenience.
The straps are simply there whenever I need them.
What I Don’t Like
My main concern is the mounting bracket.
It is a little larger than I expected, and because of its position near the top of the rail, the force from the strap may not always line up directly with the mounting point.
So far it has been fine, but I would still inspect the mount regularly, especially if using it with heavier cargo.
Compatibility
The manufacturer lists compatibility with:
- Toyota Tacoma 2005–2026
- Toyota Tundra 2008–2026
The important part is that the truck needs the compatible factory bed rail system.
If your truck does not have that rail, these will not mount correctly.
Who These Are For
These are a good fit for:
- Tacoma owners
- Tundra owners
- people who haul gear regularly
- campers
- contractors
- DIY users
- truck owners tired of loose ratchet straps
- anyone wanting cleaner cargo management
Who Should Skip Them
These are not a good fit if:
- your truck does not have the compatible bed rail system
- you drive another make of truck
- you rarely carry anything in the bed
- you need a heavy-duty commercial tie-down solution beyond the rated capacity
Always stay within the manufacturer’s working load rating and use multiple appropriately rated tie-down points when the cargo requires it.
Real-World Use
For me, these solve a very normal truck-owner problem.
I constantly put things in the bed, and if I do not secure them, they slide around.
With these mounted permanently, I do not have to hunt down a strap, untangle it, and roll it back up afterward.
It almost feels like having a factory retractable strap system built into the truck.
That is why I like them.
Final Verdict
The RIDERPM Retractable Ratchet Straps are a really convenient cargo-management upgrade for a compatible Tacoma or Tundra.
Installation is simple, the self-retracting mechanism works well, and being able to reposition the straps along the factory rail makes them useful for different loads.
I especially like that they fit with my camper shell setup.
My verdict: a practical Tacoma upgrade for anyone who uses their truck bed regularly and wants a cleaner alternative to loose ratchet straps.
