Moving With a Blink Video Doorbell: Why It’s Still One of My Favorite Security Options for Renters

When I originally installed my Blink Video Doorbell, one of the biggest reasons I liked the setup was how well it worked for apartment living.

I did not need to permanently modify the door, the camera was battery powered, and with a no-drill door mount I had a security system that felt much more renter-friendly than a permanent wired installation.

Now I’ve actually moved.

That gave me the perfect opportunity to answer an important question:

How easy is it to take the Blink Video Doorbell with you and set it up again at a new home?

In my experience, extremely easy.

Taking the Blink Doorbell With Me

The physical move was simple.

Because I use a removable door mount, I did not have to undo a permanent installation or leave anything behind.

I removed the camera from the old door, brought the doorbell and Sync Module with me, and installed everything at the new place.

That is exactly why I originally liked this type of setup for an apartment.

If you rent and expect that you may eventually move, portability matters.

Connecting Blink to a New Wi-Fi Network

The main thing that needs to change when moving is obviously the Wi-Fi network.

I put the Blink Sync Module into pairing mode and used the Blink app to connect it to the new network.

Once the Sync Module was connected, my existing system was still there.

I did not have to rebuild everything from scratch or create another Blink account.

That made the transition much easier than I expected.

Same Account, New Front Door

Once everything reconnected, I refreshed the camera thumbnail.

And there it was:

My new front door.

From the same Blink app I could:

  • use Live View
  • arm the system
  • monitor the door
  • receive notifications
  • manage the camera settings

From a user-experience standpoint, that is exactly how moving smart-home equipment should work.

Why I Still Like Blink for Apartment Living

This follow-up reinforced one of my original conclusions about the Blink Video Doorbell:

It is a very practical security option for renters.

My setup does not require me to:

  • drill into the apartment door
  • permanently hardwire the doorbell
  • leave equipment behind when I move

I can simply remove it and bring it to the next place.

That makes the investment easier to justify because I am buying security equipment for myself rather than essentially installing something permanently into a rental property.

The No-Drill Doorbell Mount Makes a Big Difference

The doorbell mount is an important part of this particular setup.

Instead of drilling into the door or exterior wall, the mount allows me to secure the Blink Doorbell to the apartment door in a removable way.

For renters, that combination makes a lot of sense:

Blink Video Doorbell + battery power + removable door mount = portable apartment security setup.

That is the configuration I personally prefer.

What I Still Like About Blink

After continuing to use the system and now moving it to another home, my biggest positives are:

  • easy installation
  • easy Wi-Fi reconnection
  • battery-powered design
  • portable setup
  • simple Blink app
  • Amazon account integration
  • ability to expand the Blink ecosystem
  • renter-friendly installation options

The fact that I was able to move the system so easily is now another major positive.

What I Don’t Like: Notification Delay

There is one thing I have noticed with continued use.

Sometimes there is a delay between something happening at the door and receiving or opening the alert in the app.

By the time I see the notification and open Live View, the person or action may already have passed.

It has not made the system unusable for me, and overall the delay is manageable, but it is something buyers should know about if immediate real-time response is extremely important to them.

Who This Is For

I think the Blink Video Doorbell is especially well suited for:

  • renters
  • apartment dwellers
  • people who move relatively often
  • anyone who wants a wireless doorbell
  • users already in the Amazon/Alexa ecosystem
  • people looking for an affordable entry into home security
  • users who may expand with additional Blink cameras later

Who Should Look at Something Else

This may not be the best choice for someone building a very elaborate security system with advanced professional-level monitoring requirements.

Blink does offer additional cameras and accessories that allow you to expand the system, but its biggest strength to me is still simplicity.

If you need a highly sophisticated security infrastructure, there are more advanced options.

My Real-World Experience After Moving

This follow-up actually makes me like the original purchase more.

When I first reviewed the Blink Doorbell, saying it was renter-friendly was based primarily on its design and installation.

Now I have actually moved with it.

I removed it, brought it to my new home, connected the Sync Module to the new Wi-Fi, mounted the camera on the new door, and continued using the same system.

That is a much stronger real-world test of portability.

Final Verdict

After moving and setting the Blink Video Doorbell up again at a new place, I think its portability is one of its strongest features.

It was easy to remove, easy to reinstall, and reconnecting the Sync Module to a new Wi-Fi network was straightforward.

The app can have some notification delay, but for my needs the overall simplicity, affordability, and portability still make the system a strong fit.

My verdict: still highly recommended for renters and apartment dwellers who want a simple security system they can actually take with them when they move.
